Fruits of Lodoicea maldivica Pers. ex H. Wendl.

Fruits of Lodoicea maldivica (Maldive coconut or Coco de mer) may come to weigh as much as 20 kg and they contain the largest seed ever known.

Seeds (from 1 to 3) are extremely rich in lipidic substances (fats and oils) and protein reserve matter (endosperm), in some instances the endosperm may be extremely hard; in this case it is known as vegetable ivory, and used for carvings and, in earlier times, for the making of buttons.
