The University of Catania

The founding of the Catania Botanical Gardens in the last century was the result of a slow process of cultural maturation which led to the recognition, within the context of the University of Catania, of the importance of botanical studies.

To understand this process it is necessary to return at least to the Renaissance when Catanese culture took a shape of its own and became aware of the need to create an institution of higher learning.

The founding of the University was the outcome of the movement of ideas which, begun in the main intellectual centres of the peninsula, were propagated as far as Sicily.
