Frontispiece from one of S. Scuderiís scientific works
The work of capable scholars who also contributed to the progress in this science was further testimony to the interest in botany. We may remember:
- Salvatore Scuderi (1781-1840) who wrote a treatise on the woods of Mt. Etna;
- Carlo Maravigna who published an essay on the flora of Catania in 1827;
- Paolo Castorina and Gaetano De Gaetani who studied medicinal plants;
- Carlo Gemmellaro (1787-1866), recognised for his work on vulcanology and geology, was also the author to a number of contributions to botanical geography and plant morphology.
