Fridiano Cavara
A prominent figure at the beginning of the century was Fridiano Cavara (1857-1929), who was appointed Chair of Botany in 1901. He was distinguished for his scientific work particularly in the flora and mycological fields, but above all attempted the experiment to acclimatise alpine plants on Mt. Etna. To this end he created an Alpine Botanical Garden which he named "Gussonea" and was situated near the Casa Cantoniera at an altitude of 1880 m.
